 More Geneva talks on S Caucasus security

 

Delegations from Russia, Abkhazia, Georgia, South Ossetia and the United States are meeting in Geneva today for the 15th round of discussions on ensuring stability and security in the South Caucasus.

 

In a statement released on Thursday the Russian Foreign Ministry said the focus would be on the non-application of force in the region and security guarantees for Abkhazia and South Ossetia.

 

The  discussions on ensuring security and stability in the South Caucasus, initially proposed by Russian and French presidents in the wake of the tragic events of August 2008 in South Ossetia, have been going for more than two years now.

 Russian border guards ensure stability and security of Abkhazia – Sergey Bagapsh

 

Sukhum, “The presence of Russian border guards in Abkhazia is of great importance. They ensure stability and security of our state; without that a normal development of economy, culture, the civil society is impossible”, the President of Abkhazia Sergey Bagapsh said in an interview with journalists after the opening ceremony of the New Athos division of the Border Guard Directorate of FSB of Russia. “We are setting out from the path of war on the path of peace and creation. This process is complicated, but it has already begun, what makes us happy”, President emphasized.

 

In his opinion, the border guard camp is simply magnificent. “The most important thing is that both the builders, and the border guard service meet the deadlines. All conditions for the service of the border guards have been created”, the head of state said.

 Moment of silence to be declared on March 4 all over the republic

 

Sukhum, A Moment of Silence will be declared on March 4 at 2:30 pm all over the republic over the anniversary of the First President of the Republic of Abkhazia Vladislav Ardzinba's death. On March 1 Prime Minister Sergey Shamba chaired a meeting of the State Commission on Memorializing the First President of the Republic of Abkhazia Vladislav Grigorievich Ardzinba. Members of the Commission discussed the issues of preparing and holding the events devoted to the anniversary of the First President's death.

 

Commemorative events in the settlement of Lower Eshera at the First President's tomb will begin with laying flowers at 1:00pm. At 2:30 pm a Moment of Silence will be declared all over the republic. At 2:31pm artillery pieces will fire 10 volleys.

 Russian guards at Abkhazian border to receive two more ships

 

Russian sea border guards at the crossing with Abkhazia will receive two additional vessels in 2011, the deputy head of the Russian Federal Security Service's border guard department said on Tuesday.

 

The number of the ships operated by the border guards will be increased to eight, Vyacheslav Dorokhin said, adding that there were no plans to further increase the number of vessels.

 

He did not specify what kind of ships or motor boats the Russian border guards are to receive.
